By early 2026, OpenAI had taken consumer Sora off the floor: the standalone app, the API, and the video button inside ChatGPT, according to public reports. Downloads spiked at launch. A few months later the heat was gone. A lot of people used it the way you use a new toy. Two sessions, then the folder sits there.
So this is not a story about the model forgetting how to render a clip. It is a story about the official shelf being cleared. If you still want Sora 2, check whether a given site still lists it. Do not assume the OpenAI homepage kept a button.
Movmix Video still has Sora 2 in the model list. That is a store shelf. It is not OpenAI opening another shop.
Why it came down
The usual account is not “the pictures suddenly got worse.” Three problems stacked.
Copyright arrived first. When Sora was pushed as a social video app, user clips filled up with protected characters and house styles. Industry groups pushed back. A later deal with Disney did not survive the mess. Chat models eat text. Video models eat frames that already belong to someone.
Cost was the second problem. Reports put daily running costs in the tens of millions of dollars, with usable output that did not match the bill. Each second of video is a long strip of frames. Idle time is expensive. When the toy phase ended, the invoice did not.
The third problem was ordinary. The product never sat inside a real workday. A pretty five seconds is easy. A clip you can hand to a client every afternoon is not. Once usage dropped, a consumer app that expensive had nowhere to stand.
The official door closed. Clips did not.
What stayed useful are models that still do image-to-video and still show up in tool menus: Kling, Seedance, Wan, MiniMax, Google’s Veo. They do not feel the same. Some follow motion. Some follow the sentence. Some are cheaper. Some hold a face longer.
On Movmix, Sora 2 is not the only row in Video. Wan, Kling, and MiniMax are there too. If the official path is gone, the practical move is simple. Use the same still. See if Sora 2 is in the list. If it is not, or the queue is dead, switch to the next row. Public reporting has not offered a return date.

If you already made Sora clips you like, download them. Whether OpenAI keeps user videos for long is not something the public statements make easy to trust. A drive is quieter than a memory.
If you still want Sora 2
Open Video and look for Sora 2. If it is there, work the way you already do: a still that makes sense, a line that covers only the next beat. If it is gone, use another model on the same page.
Available today means available today. Lists change faster than blog posts. The facts that hold are short. Consumer Sora from OpenAI is gone. Some tool sites still mount Sora 2. If you have to ship every week, keep a second model next to it.
