Gemini 4 release date is still a waiting game

2026/09/27 08:00:00

On July 21, DeepMind slipped a line into a Flash-model post: Gemini 4 had started the company’s “most ambitious pre-training run yet.” The next day, on the earnings call, Pichai said they were already training it, that the internal progress looked good, and that coding and agentic coding still needed work. The target, in his words, is the frontier as it will look when Gemini 4 ships, not the leaderboard as it looks today.

The Gemini 4 release date is still blank. On September 23, DeepMind’s new head, Koray Kavukcuoglu, told The Information’s AI Agenda Live Summit that the model was in early post-training — the stage where a base model gets tuned so it behaves — and that he expects it “much earlier” than year-end. Post-training is not a store listing. There is no model page, no price, no public gemini-4 ID you can click.

Movmix does not list Gemini 4 either. The Google video name that does match a row in Video is Gemini Omni Flash. Treat the flagship memo and the generate button as two different stories.

What Google has actually shipped this year

Next to the Gemini 4 tease came a string of Flash drops: 3.6, 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.5 Flash Cyber, then 3.7 and 3.8. Pichai said Flash should keep landing on something close to a monthly cadence. Gemini 3.5 Pro missed its June window and went to partner testing “as soon as it’s ready.”

What most people have touched since summer is that small-step line, not a new flagship. November or December dates you see in write-ups are editorial guesses from old release rhythm. Kavukcuoglu’s “earlier than year-end” is worth noting. It is not a ship date.

The same coverage puts Google behind Anthropic and OpenAI on the model race, with Meta’s assistant products picking up attention in September. None of that adds a button in Video.

The video product Google already named

At I/O in May, Google put video on Gemini Omni, not on an unreleased Gemini 4. Official copy: a model that can create from any input, starting with video; Gemini’s reasoning plus the generative media stack; a better read on gravity, kinetic energy, and fluids so scenes do not sit like stickers; SynthID on the output. Image, text, video, and audio can go into one clip.

They also talked about Omni Flash: tighter character consistency, identity and voice held across shots; in Flow, you can talk the cut around and mix a real reference with generated frames. Those sentences are about making clips now. The public Gemini 4 comments are not.

So the handoff is short. The flagship is still in the lab. The video line is Omni. Movmix has the Flash cut of that line, not Gemini 4.

What to run on Movmix while you wait

Open Video and look for Gemini Omni Flash. Same rules as last month: a still that holds together, a line that covers only the next beat. A better physics story from Google will not fix a crop that cuts off a hand.

If Omni Flash is missing or queued, the same page still has models Movmix already runs — Sora 2, Wan, MiniMax, Kling. After consumer Sora left OpenAI’s own door, the useful test stayed the same: what is in the list, not what is in the next keynote.

When Gemini 4 actually appears in Video, that is a new post. Until then, generate this week’s stills with Gemini Omni Flash. A release date is next week’s news. It is not this week’s workflow.
